Tidewater Regional Alternative Education Program

A student writes:

The teachers treat you like a real person and not a hardened criminal. The work here is more up to my level. The level system here is set up better because it lets you see your progress.

The Tidewater Regional Alternative Education Program (TRAEP) provides academic instruction to at-risk children who have been expelled from school, who have had multiple, long-term suspensions, or who are in need of a transitional placement when returning from a state learning center. Special education services are provided by certified special education teachers to students who need both alternative education and special education. These students receive educational services at three locations: Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Suffolk.

Instruction focuses on a core curriculum of Social Studies, English, Math and Science, and is adjusted to the individual learning needs of the students. The instruction adheres to the Standards of Learning (SOL) established by the Virginia Department of Education. Student in grades 6-12 receive academic services, with credit track classes available for grades 9-12. Students also receive daily pro-social skills training. In a group setting, students model, role play and practice a wide range of pro-social skills necessary for re-integration into their home-school setting.
