Career and Technical Education - "Seeds of Change Industries"

Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs (SECEP), provides comprehensive educational programming for a diverse population of students with challenging needs through high quality instruction within a safe and nurturing environment.  “Seeds of Change Industries” is the Career and Technical Education Program offered by SECEP.  This program provides students with the opportunities to gain skills needed for employment.

 

 

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION

This course provides students with training in three (3) main areas of horticulture; landscaping, greenhouse helper, and floral design.

 

Students learn and practice landscaping skills such as mowing the lawn, fertilizing and seeding, preparing the soil, and pruning shrubbery.  In the greenhouse, students learn to start plants from cuttings and seeds.

 

The course also includes limited instruction in floral design, enabling the students to make floral arrangements for special occasions.

BARBERING

This course provides students with the skills necessary to qualify for employment as a barber assistant.  Students receive instruction in safety, sanitation, hair cutting, hair styling and workplace professionalism and ethics.  Students develop skills by providing haircuts to students and staff.

 

BUILDING TRADES

This class provides students with the skills necessary to qualify for employment as a carpenter’s helper.  Students learn how to use hand and power tools to construct various projects.  They perform competency based skills under the direct supervision of a Building Trades Instructor.

 

CAFETERIA SERVICES

This course covers procedures necessary to work in a cafeteria environment.  Students receive instruction in the fundamentals of sanitation, appropriate use of small tools and equipment, and portion control.  Students develop skills in preparing and delivering foods with an on-site practical laboratory experience in a cafeteria setting.

 

CULINARY ARTS

This course covers procedures need to operate a food service establishment. Students receive instruction in the fundamentals of commercial food preparation, menu planning, sanitation, and appropriate use of tools and equipment.  Students develop skills in preparing and cooking a variety of foods in a restaurant/cafeteria setting.

 

LIBRARY SERVICE

This course covers procedures needed to work in a library environment.  Students receive instruction in the fundamentals of library service.  Students develop skills in interpersonal relations, general office tasks, and computer functions while working in a library setting.

 

NORFOLK BOTANICAL GARDENS

Student volunteers assist the Norfolk Botanical Gardens’ gardeners with basic gardening in the Enchanted Garden area.  Their tasks consist of pulling vines off trees, raking, removing fallen limbs, general clean-up and mulching.

 

ROD BUILDING

This course provides highly individualized instruction in the basic skills required to build a custom fishing rod.  Participating students will learn creative thread wrapping, guide placement, grip selection, reel seat location, and applying a crystal clear epoxy finish.  The finished products are made available for purchase.
