SECEP South Eastern Cooperative Educational Programs

History of the R.E.A.C.H. Program

Raising expectations and abilities for children with complex health needs.

History

REACH Program was developed in July 2004 by SECEP in conjunction with consultants from Virginia Commonwealth University who specialized in Severe Disabilities.  The REACH Program offers educational services to over 100 students with severe to profound disabilities aging from 2 to 21 years of age.  These children reside in residential environments at St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children and Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

The REACH Program’s mission is to provide children with complex health needs a comprehensive educational program specializing in communication skills and compassionate care that will improve their quality of life.  The REACH Program identifies the critical elements required to ensure a high quality of services for educating children with severe disabilities.

Our vision is by March 2010, we will have developed a model program that provides high quality instruction, close integration between home and school, and facilitates maximum participation of all students.
